This piece connects voluntary and involuntary learning. The first is learning by consent and the second is learning under threat. I want to make the point that illness is a form of learning; it’s just at the far end of the spectrum.
You can learn the easy way or you can learn the hard way. Most of the big lessons are the hard lessons and we seem to avoid them at all costs. That's why we end up being forced to learn them and, to a large extent, illness is one of those lessons.
